Las Guacamayas is an ecological center with 16 cabins, located in front of the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve in Marques de Comillas, Chiapas.
It is 252 kilometers from Palenque by the south border highway from Palenque towards Benemérito de las Américas after which you will turn off into an unpaved highway and continue travelling about 36 kilometers. It is only three hours from Comitán.
The tourist center is located in the municipal of Marque de Comillas in the jungle region of the state. It was created to protect a species of birds called the red macaw.
The Las Guacamayas Centre of Ecotourism was built in complete harmony with its natural surroundings and is managed by an indigenous cooperative society called “Ara Macao”. Its members are made up of the community of Reforma Agraria and the cooperative receives the financial backing of the Secretary of Tourism of the government of Chiapas and the National Fund in Aid of Businesses in Solidarity.
The center is ideal for nature lovers as it is possible to observe birds in the wild, trek through the jungle, explore the flora and fauna of the region, go on boat trip on the Lacantún and Tzeldeles rivers and go camping.
There is so much to do and see in this stunning natural reserve of more than 1,200 hectares of jungle. Observe a variety of animals in its wild natural habitat, such as howler monkeys, red macaws, white-tailed deer, toucans and white hawks just to name a few. The weather is warm and humid with high rainfall in summer.
The area is inhabitant by the Chinanteco ethic group. The people of the common farmland of Reforma Agraria originally came from the state of Oaxaca from the region of Chinanteca and speak Chinanteca.
